Weekend cover is where MSP retention quietly breaks. The rota gets shared out, the same two engineers end up taking most of it, and eighteen months later they leave. We run the weekend desk as a normal working shift so your team gets its weekends back.

Weekend demand is bimodal. Long stretches of nothing, punctuated by a change window or an outage that needs real capacity. Staffing for the average leaves you short at the peak; staffing for the peak is what your engineers resent.

The shape above is a starting point, not a package. Retail and hospitality clients push Saturday harder; professional-services clients want Sunday evening for change work. We staff to your actual pattern after the first month of data.
Three reasons MSPs buy this
What the weekend desk is really for
Retention of your own engineers
Weekend rota is the most-cited reason good MSP technicians leave. Removing it costs less than replacing one senior engineer a year, and the arithmetic usually isn't close.
A weekend SLA you can sell
Offering genuine Saturday and Sunday coverage differentiates you at renewal and justifies a higher tier — without you carrying the delivery cost of a full weekend team.
Project work that needs users offline
Tenant migrations, server replacements, firewall swaps and domain cutovers run Saturday night and get validated Sunday, so Monday opens clean.
How a weekend cutover runs
Change work is the highest-value use of the weekend desk, and the one with the most ways to go wrong. This is the sequence we hold to on every cutover.
Week before
Runbook written and signed off
Steps, owners, validation checks, rollback trigger and the point of no return, agreed with your project lead. No cutover runs on a verbal plan.
Friday
Pre-flight and freeze
Backups verified and restore-tested, prerequisites confirmed, client notified, change frozen. If a pre-flight check fails the window moves — we don't proceed on optimism.
Saturday
Execute, with a live channel
Work runs against the runbook with progress posted to a shared Teams or Slack channel at each checkpoint. Your lead can watch without being on the call.
Sunday
Validate against a written checklist
Mail flow, authentication, printing, line-of-business apps, backups re-pointed. Pilot users tested before anyone declares success.
Monday 7:00 AM
Hypercare desk open
Extra capacity on the phones for the first two business days, so the Monday wave lands on people who ran the change rather than on your day team.
Questions we get asked first
Is weekend cover billed as a premium?
Not the way your own team would charge it. Saturday and Sunday are staffed as ordinary shifts on our side with a standard weekend differential, so you're not paying overtime multiples.
Can we use it only for project windows?
Yes — some clients book weekends purely for cutovers and take no standing desk. That's quoted per window against a scoped runbook.
What about Indian public holidays?
Coverage is contracted against your calendar, not ours. Our holiday schedule is published at the start of each year and staffed around so the desk doesn't go dark.
Who owns the rollback decision?
You do. The rollback trigger is written into the runbook before the window opens, and we execute it without further discussion if the trigger is hit.
